FlexAccess is a distributed system, comprising a central office shelf (COT), equipped with service cards, and a number of remote terminals (RT). To extent the serving distance it is possible to utilize one or more span powered repeaters.

The RTs are powered through the same SHDSL pairs that are used to carry the data, and can be located in any remote location (adjunct cabinet, DLC or NGDLC cabinet, on a pole or buried). Each RT can aggregate traffic from up to 8 standard ADSL subscribers.

The FlexAccess COT equipment provides traffic aggregation and system management functions. It aggregates traffic from all remotes (up to 16) and feeds traffic into a 4xE1/IMA or an 100BaseTX uplink interface.
