Ripple control refers to systems applied to electrical energy distribution networks in order to establish one way communication enabling the load and the tariff control of low voltage consumers. The main characteristic of the systems is the use of the existing electrical network for the transmission of messages.
The Ripple Control Generator is programmed by the Electrical Utility to produce and to inject the required low frequency control messages in the medium voltage network. This message propagating into the low voltage side network controls several thousands of Ripple Control Receivers connected in the area.
The Ripple Control Receivers decode the message and act according to their programming at the low voltage side. Typical applications of the Ripple Control Receiver include all actions demanding centralised control from the power utility such as multitariff meter control, street lighting control and switching of heavy loads according to the total energy being consumed in the network.
