IoS Internet over Satellite

IoS is a software system for fast and reliable transport of unicast and multicast multimedia data over high-speed asymmetric IP networks, satellite or terrestrial. IoS also provides tools for the creation, scheduling and management of subscription data services over multicast channels.

The IoS system provides reliable IP unicasting and multicasting by means of a novel set of protocols based on UDP/IP and negative acknowledgements and may or may not need a return path depending on the transmission mode.

The IoS system reduces bandwidth requirements by using IP multicasting and caching proxies both at the transmitting and at the receiving end. It provides tools for Content Providers to create, schedule and manage multimedia services as well as tools for End Users to discover and subscribe to multimedia services.

IoS is compatible with Internet software such as HTTP servers and clients, FTP, mail, news, "push" channels, collaborative work environments etc.

The IoS system is licensed to NDS Limited, the principal operating subsidiary of News Digital Systems which is a subsidiary of the News Corporation. NDS uses IoS in its Data Broadcast Network (DBN) which operates over existing digital TV, DVB based, satellite channels and MediaStorm, a lighter version of DBN. Customers of DBN and MediaStorm are Matsushita in Japan, Reuters, Shinawatra in Thailand, Cyberstar/Loral in USA and Globecast in UK. The IoS system is also licensed to ViaSat Corp.
